AHMEDABAD: On Saturday morning, an armed robbery was thwarted near the CIMS hospital on the road to Science City when one of the attackers fell while trying to escape. He had a gun and, before falling, he shot the youngster whose bag he was trying to snatch. The youngster was injured in the hip. Sola police subsequently arrested the second accused. Police said they were also trying to find out where the criminals got the gun from.
Police said Jalpesh Patel, 26, a resident of Viratnagar in Odhav, had worked for four months as a cashier at Brinks Ltd, a cash management company located near the Dharnidhar flyover. On Saturday, he had left by bicycle on his normal route to collect money from various customers and provide them with receipts. At around 11:30 a.m., he reached the Amul lounge in Sardar Baug, opposite the CIMS hospital on the road to Science City.
“Patel got Rs 11,000 from Pragnesh Kapadia, an employee of the salon, and was in the process of issuing a receipt,” said a Sola police official.
“A college bag, in which he kept the money and documents, was between his legs. At that moment, he heard a gunshot as a youth approached him and snatched the bag near his legs. Patel chased the youngster, unaware that the bullet had hit him near his hip, ”the police official said.
The robber, however, couldn’t get far. In an attempt to escape the crowd that gathered there, he struck an iron cage reserved for trees. Soon Patel, Kapadia and others caught up with him and held him. At that point, Patel realized he was bleeding and in pain from the bullet. The police were called to the scene.
“The young detainee there was identified as Ankush Singh Chauhan, a resident of Chanakyapuri and from Bhind, Madhya Pradesh. His accomplice, later identified as Siddhrajsinh Zala, a resident of Chanakyapuri, was waiting for Chauhan with his bicycle which was rolling near the place. However, when Zala saw the commotion, he fled. He was arrested on Saturday evening. A domestically made pistol was recovered in Chauhan, ”said a Sola police official.
Police say Chauhan was working with a money collection agency and it is suspected that Chauhan and Zala followed Patel for some time before Chauhan decided to take advantage of the relatively desolate place and steal the bag containing the money. . Chauhan is believed to have acquired the gun from Madhya Pradesh, police said.
Trade fair targeted three months ago as well
Amul lounge officials said it was the second time they’ve foiled a robbery. “Three months ago, bicycle thieves came here and tried to steal a bag after throwing chilli powder in the eyes of a young man. They failed, ”Kapadia said.
