NORTH ATTLEBORO — A year-long project to provide a clearer picture of local property values is underway Monday, city officials said.
Local properties will be subject to a “measure and list” data collection program to update taxable property information.
Vision Government Solutions, the Hudson firm the city has contracted for the survey, will begin by visiting downtown properties. A map of the area is available on the city’s website, nattleboro.com.
Vision employees will have photo identification and their vehicle information will be registered with the assessors office and the police department.
In February, the city council authorized $300,000 from the city’s free cash account for the project.
This survey is of a type that has not been done for almost 40 years and is different from regular inspections that seek to determine the fair market value of homes and businesses,
“We will have updated data for the entire city, which will allow for accurate and up-to-date data to be analyzed and defined,” Assistant Assessor Cheryl Smith said in an email earlier this year.
The process will be completed by FY2024.
- Exterior measurements of the house/building including a new photo.
- Outbuildings and additional features on the property such as sheds, swimming pools, independent garages.
- Information about the interior of the house or building, including number of bedrooms, bathroom floors, heating, finished basement, additional kitchen, etc.
- If the residents do not wish to admit the inspectors, they will make their best guesses from the outside.
The city reviews sales data annually to determine fair market value and also conducts a more thorough reassessment every five years.
